Muscatine Power and Water Breach: You May Qualify for Settlement Funds

Muscatine Power and Water is facing a class action lawsuit over a targeted cyberattack that hit its computer systems in January 2024. According to the suit, hackers accessed files that may have contained personal details like names and Social Security numbers.

Muscatine hasn't admitted any wrongdoing, it denies the allegations entirely and is settling simply to sidestep the expense and unpredictability of continued litigation, not because a court found it liable.

Nothing is finalized yet. A judge still needs to grant final approval, with a hearing set for December 17, 2026. Money won't be distributed unless the settlement clears that approval and any appeals that follow.

You could be eligible if Muscatine identified you as affected by the breach, this includes anyone who received a data breach notice. Excluded from the settlement are the presiding judge and their immediate family and staff, Muscatine's officers, directors, and affiliated companies, and anyone who chooses to opt out.

To participate, you'll need to file a Claim Form by October 26, 2026. The online form requires a LoginID and PIN found on the notice you received by mail or email. Missing those credentials? Email [email protected] with your full name and mailing address to request them.

Claims for out-of-pocket costs or extraordinary losses need supporting documentation like receipts, self-written notes can supplement other evidence but won't be accepted alone. Claims for lost time don't require any paperwork. The Settlement Administrator will review submissions and may reach out if something's missing, giving you a chance to correct it before a final decision is made.
