Case overview

What is the Apple AirTag case about?

A wave of lawsuits claims that instead of simply helping people find lost keys or luggage, Apple's AirTags have been exploited by stalkers and abusers who hide the small trackers in cars, bags, and personal belongings to secretly monitor victims.

The complaints allege Apple was aware of this risk when AirTag launched but didn't build in strong enough protections to quickly alert people being tracked without their knowledge. Court filings cite more than 40,000 unwanted tracking reports logged in the device's first three years. The lawsuits raise claims of negligence, design defect, and failure to warn.

Apple disputes the allegations, saying AirTag was built to help people locate belongings, not track other people. The company points to anti-stalking updates rolled out since 2021, including shortening how long it takes before an unknown AirTag emits a sound, and launching cross-platform tracking alerts in partnership with Google in May 2024.

On October 2, 2026, these lawsuits were consolidated into a single proceeding, MDL No. 3199, now overseen by Judge Noel Wise in the Northern District of California, after an earlier request for class certification was denied.
