Case overview
What is the Cash App case about?
Did you send money or cryptocurrency on Cash App because someone lied to you, and then never get it back? A proposed $12 million settlement may cover you.
The lawsuit claims Block did not keep up the customer verification and suspicious activity reporting procedures that federal and state law require. Because of that, the plaintiffs say, scam accounts were able to keep running on Cash App. That includes accounts behind "pig butchering" investment scams, where scammers build trust with you before pushing you to "invest." Block denies the allegations and says it did nothing wrong.
Two Cash App users filed the case in January 2025. They say they lost about $3,200 and nearly $20,000 after an investment scheme had them send bitcoin through the app. They made unfair competition, negligence, and unjust enrichment claims on behalf of Cash App users across the country.
The case had some ups and downs. In December 2025, the judge dismissed the first complaint but let the plaintiffs try again, saying it did not clearly connect any specific legal violation to their losses. The plaintiffs filed an amended complaint in January 2026, and Block asked the court to dismiss that one too. The court never ruled on that request, because the two sides reached a settlement and filed it on October 9, 2026.
The proposed settlement would cover payments you chose to make yourself after being misled. That includes cases where you paid but never got what you were promised. It would not cover transfers you did not make or approve, like money taken after someone broke into your account. This is a separate case from the earlier Cash App data breach settlement and the government refund programs.
If the court approves the deal, Block would set up a $12 million fund. People who send in valid claims would be repaid for qualifying transactions on a shared, proportional basis. That means how much you get would depend on how much everyone claims in total. Attorneys' fees and costs would also come out of the fund.
