Toyota Airbag Settlement: $78.5M Claim Details

A lawsuit claims certain Toyota vehicles were built with ZF-TRW airbag control units susceptible to electrical overstress, a defect that allegedly could stop airbags and other passenger-safety systems from deploying correctly in a crash. Toyota denies these allegations, denies breaking any law or duty, and has not admitted liability or wrongdoing.

The settlement received final court approval on November 28, 2023. Though an appeal followed, it was dismissed on December 11, 2025, making the settlement final. Claims, deficiency notices, and payments are now being handled on a rolling basis.

Eligibility extends to current and former owners and lessees of specific Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Avalon, Avalon HV, Tacoma, Tundra, and Sequoia vehicles, based on model, model year, ownership or lease status as of July 31, 2023, and the vehicle's VIN.

Owners whose vehicles were part of the airbag-control-unit recall can seek reimbursement for reasonable, unreimbursed expenses tied to completing that recall. Even class members whose vehicles weren't recalled can register for a potential residual distribution of settlement funds.

To file online, claimants need the Class Member ID listed on their settlement notice; those who don't have it can call 1-833-747-5737 to request it, or submit a downloadable paper Registration/Claim Form instead.

Reimbursement claims for out-of-pocket costs must include receipts, invoices, wage records, or similar proof; a signed affidavit may substitute if documentation isn't available. The settlement administrator can audit claims and request more evidence, and anyone who receives a deficiency or partial-approval notice has 45 days from that notice to respond with the additional information requested.
