Amazon Alexa Privacy Class Action Lawsuit Over Recorded Conversations

A privacy and wiretapping lawsuit accuses Amazon of letting Alexa-enabled devices capture, store, and in some cases share voice recordings of conversations users never meant for the device to hear, and never agreed to share. The complaint claims these practices broke federal and state wiretapping laws as well as Washington's Consumer Protection Act, arguing Amazon kept the recordings indefinitely and used them for its own purposes.

The case has cleared a key procedural hurdle: a judge certified a class covering certain owners of registered Alexa devices, letting their claims move forward together. However, the judge refused to certify a separate group of unregistered-device users, ruling their claims were too individualized to proceed as a class.

The litigation is still active, and there is no classwide settlement or payout available at this stage.
