Apple Watch Owners: Lawsuit Over Cut-Short Software Support

A newly filed proposed class action accuses Apple of cutting off major watchOS updates for the Apple Watch Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, SE (2nd generation), and original Ultra before these devices reached the end of their expected useful lives.

According to the complaint, the new watchOS 27 doesn't work with these models, and being stuck on watchOS 26 without further major updates will make them progressively slower, glitchier, or unusable. The suit also alleges that Apple never told buyers, before purchase, how long they could expect major software support to last.

The plaintiff is pursuing claims for breach of contract, breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, and violation of California's Unfair Competition Law. The suit seeks class certification along with actual, compensatory, and consequential damages, restitution, disgorgement, declaratory and injunctive relief, punitive or exemplary damages where the law allows, plus attorneys' fees, costs, and interest.

Importantly, this case is still in its early stages, it is a lawsuit, not a settlement. No class has yet been certified, there's no claims process to join, and available sources don't indicate how Apple plans to respond to the allegations.

The proposed class would include California residents who bought any of the named Apple Watch models.
