OpenAI Lawsuit From Florida AG: Alleged ChatGPT Deception and Risks

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has launched what's described as the first state-led civil lawsuit of its kind against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. Filed June 1, 2026, in the Circuit Court of the Tenth Judicial Circuit in Highlands County, Florida, the suit accuses the company of releasing and heavily marketing ChatGPT to the public, including to children, while allegedly concealing serious risks tied to the product, suppressing internal warnings about its safety, and misleading Floridians about what the technology actually does and how dangerous it can be. The complaint lays out ten separate counts against OpenAI, including alleged violations of the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act for unfair, unconscionable, and deceptive conduct, along with claims of negligence, gross negligence, strict liability for defective design and failure to warn, fraudulent misrepresentation, and public nuisance.
