Case overview

What is the Hyundai settlement about?

This proposed settlement centers on certain 2016-2019 Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid vehicles. According to the lawsuit, when these cars' high-voltage batteries failed and needed replacement under warranty, Hyundai was unable to complete the repairs in a timely way. Many owners say their vehicles sat out of service for extended stretches between late 2021 and summer 2023, leaving them without use of their cars.

Hyundai denies any wrongdoing. The company maintains the vehicles and batteries are not defective and argues that any delays stemmed from factors beyond its control, including COVID-19-related supply chain disruptions and holdups from outside parts suppliers. Rather than go through a trial, both sides agreed to settle.

The Court has granted preliminary approval, but the settlement is not yet final. A Final Approval Hearing is set for December 21, 2026, and payments will only be distributed if the Court grants final approval and any appeals are resolved.

You may be eligible if you owned or leased one of these vehicles and its high-voltage battery repair, done during the warranty period, took longer than 60 days to complete. To claim payment, you'll need to submit a signed Claim Form, certified under penalty of perjury, before the deadline.

Payments, called a "Days Down Payment", are calculated based on the number of days your vehicle was out of service awaiting the battery repair, using Hyundai's own records for the day count. The base rate is $10 per day, but it can increase to as much as $15 per day if total approved claims add up to less than $250,000. In other words, the longer your car was down, the bigger your potential payout.

For most claimants, the signed Claim Form alone will be enough. However, the settlement administrator may request additional documentation proving ownership if there's uncertainty or dispute over who owned the vehicle during the repair window, and may ask for other supporting information as needed.

To begin, simply enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the claim website, if it's eligible, your vehicle's details will be automatically populated.
